For young people starting out in work, gaining a driver’s licence can make a real difference to how independently they can manage employment, training, and everyday commitments. For 20-year-old Emily from Dimbulah, it was the next important step in continuing her work as a Farmhand and building greater independence.
Emily had already completed her 100 logbook hours and hazard perception test, putting her close to the finish line. What she needed next was more time behind the wheel, some extra guidance to strengthen her driving skills, and access to a suitable vehicle for the practical assessment.
Through the TRACQS Driving Participation Option, Emily worked closely with our driving instructor over several weeks, completing regular sessions between Dimbulah and Mareeba. The drives gave her time to practice in different road conditions and focus on the areas she needed to strengthen before test day.
During her lessons, Emily worked on manoeuvres, road rules, safe driving techniques, and the practical skills needed to handle everyday situations on the road. The regular sessions also helped her become more comfortable driving longer distances and applying what she had learned in real-world conditions.
TRACQS also supported the practical side of the process. The team booked and paid for Emily’s assessment and provided the training vehicle she needed on the day, making sure cost and access to a suitable car didn’t stand in the way of her progressing.
On 18 June, Emily’s hard work paid off when she successfully passed her test and gained her provisional licence.

For Emily, the achievement means greater flexibility in getting to work and managing day-to-day commitments, while also making future employment and training opportunities more accessible.
Reflecting on the milestone, Emily said she was “proud of herself and grateful for TRACQS’ support in helping her gain her licence and continue in her employment.”
At TRACQS, our focus is on providing practical support that responds to the needs of the people and communities we work with, and we’re committed to creating pathways that lead to real opportunities and stronger outcomes across the region.
