The TRACQS team took on an exciting challenge to not just repair the Kuranda Skate Park, but to transform it into a vibrant community hub for all to enjoy.
Our Community Activity Manager Lance Starr led the initiative and worked with Mareeba Shire Council to get the skatepark returned to its former glory, breathing new life into what will be a great meeting place for the community.
TRACQS Property Maintenance Team played a significant role in repairing the skate park, leading to an outstanding outcome. This success was made possible through our Community Development Program Trial Community Projects, which created the opportunity to hire job seekers as Community Assistance Workers to contribute to the project. The project was a beacon of community spirit, including the following repairs and building of:
Not only was this a fantastic project to give a colourful boost to Mareeba Shire, but it has assisted TRACQS Community Assistance workers to upskill in areas such as:
The team also removed the existing paint from the skate bowl in preparation for a mural by Cairns Artist, Jak Lilley, creating a colourful finishing touch to the project.
The artwork was made to complement the new design of the skatepark and paid homage to the surrounding communities of Kuranda, Koah, Mantaka, Kowrowa, and Mona Mona.
In December 2024, after much community anticipation, the Kuranda Skatepark was officially re-opened in time for the school holidays. The re-opening day was celebrated on the 7th of December at a community event with local skaters, BMX riders, a live DJ and a free BBQ.
Lance Starr has expressed gratitude for the opportunity to revitalise the skate park:
“The Kuranda Skate Park has been an amazing project to be a part of. I would like to thank Mareeba Shire Council for the opportunity to collaborate on the project and for all their assistance. I’d also like to thank Adric Rusch, Jason Ball, and the Community Assistance Workers who worked tirelessly on this project.”
The TRACQS team are grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a space that will benefit the Kuranda community for years to come.
