Zaymon was in search of the blueprint that would help him construct a career in carpentry.
It was May 2024 when Zaymon first joined TRACQS, showing clear ambition to start his career, and a strong commitment to personal and professional growth to achieve his goal.
Upon recognising his potential, the TRACQS team offered him a role as a Community Assistant Worker for the Custom Coffins activity, a specialised Community Development Program (CDP) activity that involves crafting coffins for the local community.
The Custom Coffins activity helps participants to upskill in the areas of carpentry, furniture making and spray painting and presents an opportunity to donate coffins to those in need, personalised to fit family requirements.
This role provided him with an opportunity to develop foundational skills relevant to his career aspirations whilst also giving him a chance to make a positive impact on his community.
Since his commencement, Zaymon has hit many important milestones for his employment journey. He successfully obtained his White Card, a crucial requirement for working in the construction industry.
Additionally, Zaymon participated in the TRACQS Learner Driver Activity under the guidance of supervisor Chris Long, who provided valuable mentoring during Zaymon’s driving lessons. Their efforts culminated in Zaymon successfully earning his Provisional Driver’s License in September 2024 and has since purchased his own car which has given him more independence and flexibility for future work.
Throughout his time at TRACQS, Zaymon has received positive feedback from his supervisors. Dale, his immediate supervisor, remarked on Zaymon’s ability to quickly adapt to processes and excel in his role.
Lance Starr, TRACQS Employer Activities Manager, highlighted Zaymon’s rapid development of carpentry skills, praising his craftsmanship and notable improvement over a short period.
“I’ve had the pleasure in teaching him the aspects of good craftsmanship since he began working as a Community Assistant Worker. He is a valued member of the team and a good learner and worker,” Lance Starr said.
Today, with a plethora of new skills under his belt, Zaymon is reveling in the rewarding work that has come with his role in the custom coffins activity and has shown great pride in his journey so far.
“Being employed by TRACQS has been life changing for me. During my time there, not only have I learnt new skills, but I have also gained more confidence in myself and what I can do. The Custom Coffins activity helps so many people in the community. Although it is a sad time for families, I feel good that we can help and I am proud of the work we do to give them beautiful coffins,” Zaymon said.
TRACQS continues to actively seek opportunities to place Zaymon into a formal apprenticeship. With his dedication, growing skill set, and strong support from the TRACQS team, Zaymon is well on his way to achieving his career goals.
TRACQS is bringing local experience and knowledge to deliver the Community Development Program (CDP) proudly supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA).
CDP is an employment program for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians in regional, rural and remote Australia to achieve sustainable employment outcomes by strengthening skills, addressing barriers and contributing to their communities through a range of flexible work-like activities.
